You have heard many times that you cannot truly love someone else until you love yourself. Looking for love outside of yourself is a recipe for disaster. The loving relationship you so desperately seek is NOT meant to be the key to your happiness. That “KEY” you are searching for is within YOU! Your relationships are enhancements to your happiness but NOT the SOURCE of it. Happiness – as you've heard before – is an INSIDE job and it begins with learning to love and accept yourself.
When you begin the journey to self love, your life shifts in amazing ways. First off, you FEEL better. You stop looking for validation of your worth. You understand that you ARE worthy. A ripple effect begins to filter out into your day to day life. You smile more. Do not underestimate the value of your smile. Your smile can uplift the person you share it with. People begin to gravitate towards you because of the positivity you exude. Your relationships begin to shift as well.
Loving yourself leads to loving your life and life becomes an exhilarating adventure, full of chills and thrills and moments that can take your breath away. Isn't that what you want anyway? To be able to face each day with enthusiasm for what may be? It all begins with YOU! Your greatest love affair in your life is the one you have with YOURSELF!
Here are some ways to begin the Journey to Loving Yourself:
1. Stop Criticizing Yourself.
You are your own worst critic and it doesn't serve you. That negative self talk does more harm than good. Refuse to criticize yourself. Accept yourself exactly as you are. You are always changing, growing, evolving. When you understand this, you can notice what needs to shift within you without beating yourself up or calling yourself wrong. You simply choose to change.
2. Let Go.
Release the past. Stop dwelling in what was or what could have been. Again, this doesn't serve you. It just keeps you stuck. Don’t blame yourself for decisions you made before. You did the best you could with the knowledge you had. Now you are growing and changing, and you will live life differently. You will make different, more empowering choices. Forgive yourself as that is what sets you free from your self-imposed prison.
3. Stop Worrying!
Worrying is wasted energy. In fact, you know – because you are a Goddess Creator – that worrying is creating exactly what you do not want! Break this habit by noticing when you are in “worry mode” and consciously choose to shift your focus to what you wish to see . Again, do not beat yourself up here for having the worrisome thoughts. Just lovingly, gently remind yourself that you are choosing to see your life through the eyes of love – which includes seeing yourself in that manner – and shift the focus on to the outcome you would like to see.
4. Be Gentle, Kind and Patient.
Be gentle with yourself. Be kind to yourself. Be patient with yourself. Impatience is a resistance to your growth and expansion. Breathe. Don’t berate yourself when you make a mistake – and you WILL make a mistake. It’s OK to make a mistake. Mis-takes are how you learn and grow. Meditation will help you so commit to a meditation practice as best as you can. Begin with at least 5 minutes a day.
5. Be Kind to Your Mind.
Everyone has thoughts they would rather not have. It's natural and part of the human experience. Don’t hate yourself for having the thoughts. Gently change your thoughts to something more positive. An affirmation that may help with this is, “As I love and approve of myself and others, my life gets better and better”.
6. Praise Yourself.
Criticism breaks you down. Praise lifts you up. Praise yourself as much as possible. Make it a conscious habit to tell yourself how well you are doing with every little thing, no matter how small or insignificant you may think the “thing” is.
7. Support Yourself.
Seeking support is a sign of strength. Really take that one in! You are not meant to make these dramatic changes alone! Find ways to support yourself. Reach out to friends and allow them to help you. Join a program or hire a coach to support you on the journey.
8. Treat Your Body Well.
Incorporate good nutrition and exercise into your life. Think of food as fuel for your body. What fuel does your body need to have optimum energy and vitality? Appreciate and bless your food knowing your body will pull exactly what it needs. Get outside and breathe fresh air. How much time do you spend in your work environment with recycled air? What exercises do you enjoy? Move your body daily. Your body is the temple that houses your Inner Goddess. Cherish and respect it.
9. Practice Mirror Work.
I am a fan of Louise Hay and mirror work. Look into your eyes often. Express the love you have for yourself. Tell yourself how wonderful your life is. At least once a day, say, “I love you, I really love you!”
10. Love Yourself… Do It Right Now.
The time to begin is right now! Don’t wait until you get well, or lose the weight, or get the new job, or find the new relationship. Begin now—do it for yourself. You’ll feel so much better and everything else will fall into place.
11. Laugh – a lot.
Find the things that make you laugh. Remember when you were a child, what things made you giggle uncontrollably? Find them and enjoy them again. Laughter is the best medicine. Life is meant to be fun. You came here for the JOY of it so start being more joyful. Regain your childlike enthusiasm for laughter and play.
12. Love Others.
When you express love to yourself, it is easier to see your life through the eyes of love and this includes seeing those around you with love. Express love and appreciation to those around you. The Universe will reciprocate. Don’t blame others or react to them. Know that everyone is doing the best they can, from where they are on their path, with what they have.
Call to Action
Words don't teach. Experience teaches so my mentor's request to you is to give yourself an experience of self love! Pick one of the above tips and commit to working with it for the next month. Notice what begins to shift for you as you put the tip into practice. Record what you discover in your journal. Then, move on to another tip, and another, and another and before you know it, you will BE that SOURCE of happiness for yourself!
